When a Cup of Tea Carries a Community Story

Cultural connection often begins with something people can experience.

It may begin with a flavour, a melody, a work of art, a shared meal, or a cup of tea. Through these everyday cultural experiences, people discover places and communities that might otherwise remain distant from them.

Tea from Doi Pu Muen has gradually travelled beyond the mountain through product development, culinary creativity, cultural tourism, exhibitions, gifts, and storytelling.

Tea leaves from the community have been used in contemporary food, drinks, and chocolate, presenting local agricultural knowledge through new creative forms. Tea tourism has also allowed visitors to experience harvesting, processing, tasting, local cuisine, forest landscapes, and Lahu cultural life more directly.

The Tea Learning Centre established within the community has supported the sharing of knowledge, community-enterprise development, environmental awareness, and low-carbon tourism. The centre has welcomed Thai and international volunteers and has received recognition connected with sustainable tourism management.

This is where a local product can become more than a commodity.

Tea becomes an invitation to learn about the mountain’s forests, culture, the community’s history, alternative livelihoods, clean energy, intergenerational knowledge, and the work required to carry a local tradition into contemporary life.

Through Grandpa Muen’s Tea, Tiara WeShare seeks to help bring this story to wider audiences. The intention is not to speak in place of the community, but to create additional pathways through which its tea, knowledge, and heritage may be discovered and appreciated.

When the tea reaches a meeting table, a museum shop, a hotel, a cultural event, or an international guest, it carries a part of Doi Pu Muen with it.

That is the quiet power of culture: something grown on one mountain can create understanding far beyond it.
